Update on De-registration of Children’s Centres – Scarborough & Whitby

In October 2024 it was agreed at Executive following public consultation to de-register all 18 designated children’s centres enabling greater flexibility of future use. 

Following this decision, it was agreed to establish a working group to identify the future building requirement of the Children and Young People’s Service to ensure continued delivery of services whilst enabling the rationalisation and more efficient use of buildings and the achievement of identified savings.

Those centres in the Scarborough Whitby area are as follows.

•           Filey Sure Start Children's Centre – located on site of Filey Infant School site.

•           Whitby & District Sure Start Children's Centre -located on Stakesby CP School site.

•           Briercliffe Sure Start Children's Centre - located on Barrowcliff School site.

•           Friarage Sure Start Children's Centre - located on Friarage CP School site.

Property Services have a rolling programme to ensure efficient use of properties when service operating models change. The de-registration of Children’s Centres will provide greater flexibility to identify opportunities for property rationalisation whilst continuing to support effective service delivery. Any savings achieved as part of the future rationalisation of buildings will contribute to a corporate property savings target.

Until this work is completed the Children and Families Service will continue to retain use of all buildings for service delivery.
